The Tattooed Up Wedding at Guisachan House
This beautiful wedding at Guisachan House. A gorgeous venue, it seems like it was made just for photographers. And, perhaps, for gardeners too. If you're in the market for a wedding venue, definitely check it out.
We start out at an Airbnb. I knew the ring shot had to be unique, and what's more unique than a human canvas?
The full gallery is just below. This is one of my larger galleries, at 100 images. Of course, it's simply a highlights gallery. The full gallery is over 600 pictures, which is far more than what I have space for on this website!
I see more Bride ...

The Engagement in Beaverdell
Beaverdell is a little city up in our Monashee Mountains. Known for the biking trails and numerous hikes, it's not a bad way to spend an afternoon. Especially if you're looking for an engagement shoot. The best thing about the Okanagan - there are unlimited locations when it comes to engagement photos!
This time of year I'm shooting every day. Monday, I blog (if there's time), Tuesday to Friday I edit and shoot in the evenings, and Saturday and Sunday I'm usually shooting weddings. I find it's the perfect mix of indoors and outdoors. My hair is lighter brown than it was in May, but I'm still pasty white for some rea ...

The Turtle Mountain Engagement Session
There's no place better to shoot an engagement than the Okanagan, especially when it's sunny and nice out. These two were a little shy, after a few minutes we were all laughing and joking like old friends.
They weren't sure of the area, so we drove all over the place. This is a dock on Kal Beach, next we heading to a small wooded area I like to take photos in.
And then to Turtle Mountain. It got pretty windy!
But we still did just fine. It gets chilly sometimes, all three of us were fr ...

Baby Photos in Vernon, BC
We all know what you're here for. Large gallery of baby photos from this shoot at the bottom of the page. :-D Right click to save, but please remember to give Draht Photography image credit. Enjoy. :-D
I used to take photos when babies are under ten days. I've gotten some great photos of the little ninjas in that time frame, and under request I'll still do it. The last few shoots, just as an experiment, have been more towards the 6-8 weeks period. The idea behind that is that we can show more of the personality. Over time, that's what my photography has become - just character traits. Honesty is beautiful ...

The Silver Star Wedding near Vernon, BC
I've often toyed with how I'm going to have my wedding. One of the ideas that keep coming back to me is to rent a large house or two for a weekend at Silver Star, have the ceremony in the back yard, and just have a weekend celebration with all my friends and family. With Tube Town, the hiking, and all the ski paths, there's a lot to do. Even 5 restaurants up in the village.
It's good to know I'm not alone with this idea. This lovely couple pulled it off so well. We started right in the thick of things. I arrive a little after 11:00am to meet up with the bride and groom.
I saw the incredible Jessie V ...

An Engagement at Sovereign Lake
I've been photographing engagements for a while. My technique evolves as my standards grow, which is the way it should be. Always be pushing yourself.
When I shoot, there should always been a plan in place. I like to have locations, light, props, and outfits all picked out. I've learned a long time ago that a planned shoot will always turn out better than a spur of the moment shoot. That's why my brides and I stay so close in the planning stages.
Things are gearing up now. I've got a wedding tomorrow, and the photography lessons are Monday, March 6. I'm really excited about that - the last set of lessons was incr ...

An Engagement at Bridal Falls
Bridal Falls has always been one of my favourite places to hike. It's situated right in a lush valley, a little past Enderby. It's one of the many hidden gems in the Okanagan, another stunning place to take photos.
There's some piles of wood I've been wanting to take advantage of forever. Now that I know how photogenic they are (and temperamental), we'll see how easy it is to work them into a wedding day. The main issue is the travel time. Enderby is about 35 minutes out of Vernon, and Bridal Falls is closer to 90 minutes.
It can be pretty worth it, though. I recently ordered a d ...

An Engagement overlooking Kalamalka Lake
Although I just finished photographing my last wedding, it doesn't mean I'm taking some time off. Shoots need to be booked. Ideas need to be drawn up for headliner images. Engagement sessions must take place. New techniques must be explored.
As a photographer, there is never time to sit back and relax. The world is moving ahead. There is so much work to be done. I'd say it's one of the best things about this profession. I love waking up in the morning and knowing that I've got tasks at hand. My work is always right in front of me.
And that leads us into the next shoot. We wen ...

From Sanctuary Gardens to Gellatly Highlights
Sanctuary Gardens is one of my favourite places to shoot in Kelowna. There's all this tall brush, in this picturesque scene atop a mountain in West Kelowna.
Our day starts with a few ring shots.
Just outside the venue where we set up, I saw some mushrooms. Always take advantage of your environment, but make sure you have more than one location. In case you've been taking too much advantage of your environment.
We found a great place for the dress photo near the upstairs apartment.
Meanwhile, the girls were getting read ...

The Old Barns and Classic Cars Gallery
Some of you may remember this couple from the Engagement shoot that we did not too long ago. Engagement shoots are a fun, easy way to for me get an idea of what the day will feel like.
The day was great. This is one of those albums that took me a lot of time to go over. There was so much to process, I didn't want to miss a single moment.
The morning was pretty calm. Kids running around, five bridesmaids. Suits, ties, dresses getting ironed.
Even the puppy was dressed up at his best.
Over at the bride's, there we ...

The Farm Fresh Dairy Country Wedding in Salmon Arm
Yes, this Salmon Arm wedding takes place in a real working dairy farm.
And it has everything a photographer could ask for. We had barns full of hay, fields of young corn, a 1967 Pontiac Beaumont, and a gorgeous couple.
The decorations were incredible too. Huge shout out to TTM events for putting together one of the most stunning floral arrangements I've ever seen. I know there's brides out there looking for vendors and ideas - check out this website for plenty of inspiration!
It was every kind of stunning. I've attended a wedding or two, ...

An Almost Rainy Wedding Wedding at Kelowna Quail Ridge
The start was all over Kelowna - a heritage house, a hair salon. We went next door to an apartment building to take photos of the dress and rings. On the way, we met the groundskeepers.. We were worried about taking photos on their property, because technically we were trespassing. When we saw them watering plants and pruning in the distance, we knew we had to take action. I ran to them. And I must have looked like a sight - wedding dress carefully draped over one arm, and the rings in a gold-coloured bag in my other hand.
I complimented them on their garden. The trees, all the different ...

2016 Graduation Shoot
Gotta love the Grad Photos
Probably my favourite time of year, and iconic as well. It's a mix of who I get. Sometimes it's mothers who want a few photos of their daughters before they take off. Sometimes it's high schoolers who'd like something nice for their family. Either way, it's a wonderful gift for the family and something experience tells us they will cherish forever.
Often Graduation photos are taken 3- 4 weeks in advance, at hair demo day. This is so we can get some uninterrupted photos. The photos, of course, can be kept secret until grad day. I know no one wants their dress surprise spoilt for grad day! Generally, w ...

The Durali Villa Wedding
This was a really incredible wedding. First off, at one of my favourite venues - Durali Villa. Out on Old Kamloops road, it's close to Westside Road and O'Keefe ranch - two fantastic spots for pictures. And you can even get it through AirBNB. So you can reserve it early or late. Sleeps 16, and has a a huge pool and a theatre room. You basically rent the house, your whole family can stay there, and it's like a party weekend.
There were a lot of unique touches in this wedding. Custom sandblasted glasses, all those crates with the party favours were hand made. Yup, every one of them for every guest was assembled, ...

The 10 Year Anniversary Shoot
Even now, after editing, it's hard to believe they've been married for ten years.
I posted this to my twitter with the tag "Relationship Goals" and I that holds true. The whole time, they had no trouble with the connection. I suppose after ten years you get pretty comfy with each other! They were always cracking jokes and making each other laugh. And tickling. And the whole thing. It was fun for me too, to see a couple that fit together so well like two pieces of the puzzle.
We shot this out on Commonage, a little past Allan Brooks. Although the mosquitos almost had us for lunch, ...

A Sparkling Hill Engagement
Well, Sparkling Hills and Predator Ridge. Nothing like a big grassy mountains on a golf course. Sparkling hills is right in the middle of a lush forest and never ending mountains, making the perfect spot for an engagement shoot.
And Sparkling Hills has so much to offer.
What I love about engagement photos is that, for many couples, this is the first time they've ever had pictures taken together. Poses are a little shaky, couples are a little awkward. I enjoy this - we get to learn to know each other. I always make sure I show couples the photos right after I take them, so they can see how they're translating to the camer ...

The Grad Photos in Vernon
Graduation photos are among my favourite. It's a big day - that movement from kindergarten to grade 12. There's a tangible excitement in the air, not unlike what you feel on a wedding day. However, it's a little more intense on a wedding day.
I try to schedule the grad shoots in April or May.
It's not a good idea to schedule the day of - reason being, it's going to be quite hot, and probably have some pretty low quality light. We head to our particular location and do our best to use high quality light and reflections to create a truly special album.
And that's what we did here. I love how these turned out. I try to make sure my photos d ...

Portrait and Grad Highlights
Portraits are unique.
They can come from anywhere.
Many times, it depends on the time of year. In April and May, I'm contracted to do grad portraits. In June, I tend to shoot more for magazines. You'll see my work pop up form time to time in Pulp Magazine, Okanagan Life Magazine, and Ratchet Magazine. Since my original background is in fashion photography, I seem to be a favourite of magazine editors.
Head shots are all year around.
There's a mixture of studio work and outdoor work. To be honest, I like to capture folks in their natural environment. A man sitting by his dog, a young girl posing near a forest path where she grew up. Ther ...

After my first maternity shoot, I was hooked.
There was something about it. The subjects, the nature. The way everything interacted together. It was intense , but so beautiful all at once.
That's not to say there's not risk involved. See, usually you want to schedule your maternity shoot as close to your due date as possible. That way that baby bump is for sure bumpin'. However, every now and then we have one scheduled and I get the call. "Hey. We might have to turn that maternity shoot into a family shoot." And I laugh. Baby shoots are great too, and you'll see quite a few of them in my family highlights album.
Not this album, though. ...

Family Photo Highlights
To be honest, I never saw myself as a family photographer originally.
That's not to say I don't love doing them. I come from a family of nine kids, so being around children comes naturally to me. You might have also seen me over christmas taking santa photos at the mall. That was a little intense for my tastes. I like to take my time, get to know everyone.
The reason I never saw myself as a family photographer is my style. It can be darker, and a little moody sometimes. It was beyond my comprehension that someone would want my signature look framed and above their mantle. But despite that, I got a call or two. An interesting thing happens ...
