Engagement Collections

I really have just the most fun when it comes to engagement shoots. I get to really connect with my couples, we take some fun photos. This section gets updated a lot at the start of the year – early spring seems to be the trend. We all spend a lot of time and effort coming up some really great scenes. I hope you enjoy. ūüėÄ

The Grass and the Mountain Engagement
As an engagement photographer, I'm looking for honest expressions and simple compositions.     ‚ÄúOur life is frittered away by detail. Simplify, simplify.‚ÄĚ ‚Äē¬†Henry David Thoreau,¬†Walden and Other Writings And this is still true. In a photograph, I like to take advantage of what I've got. Solid colours for colour theory, Vernon's mountain ranges, and a little bit of smoke from the forest fires.     The faded tones made for a dreamlike composition, and the tall grass complimented the scenes.       And of course, part way through, the wind was going to kick in. &nbs ...

The Engagement in Beaverdell
Beaverdell is a little city up in our Monashee Mountains. Known for the biking trails and numerous hikes, it's not a bad way to spend an afternoon. Especially if you're looking for an engagement shoot. The best thing about the Okanagan - there are unlimited locations when it comes to engagement photos!     This time of year I'm shooting every day. Monday, I blog (if there's time), Tuesday to Friday I edit and shoot in the evenings, and Saturday and Sunday I'm usually shooting weddings. I find it's the perfect mix of indoors and outdoors. My hair is lighter brown than it was in May, but I'm still pasty white for some rea ...

A Wet Engagement Album near Ellison Park
Engagement sessions are in Vernon and Kelowna, generally at the start or end of the year. There's weeks in August and September where I'll shoot four weddings in a week. That might sound a little crazy, but if you understood how much I just love photographing weddings you'd envy me.       We start out in tall grass, up by¬†kekuli bay. Because of the recent flooding, we've enjoyed the greenest mountains. Tall grass and sunsets are my jam.     Some people wonder if they should bring their dog to their engagement session. The answer is yes! I like the way pictures turn out when the whole f ...

The Coldstream Engagement by the Lake
This engagement mini is at Kal Park,¬†in Coldstream, BC. There's a a small path¬†you can climb up, right above the first parking lot. Once you get to the end, there's a hidden place with a lovely view of Vernon. Tall grass, trees, and Kalamalka lake.     In many sessions, I prefer a scene with a view. Beforehand, in the email stage, we go through a few locations. That's the great thing about Vernon - there's more places to take photos than anywhere I've ever been. Within 15 kilometres of Vernon, we have 50 parks marked. I can shoot at a different park every day for two months. And that's not counting the hundreds of hikin ...

Engagement Season in Kelowna and Vernon is Here
Engagement season in Kelowna and Vernon is one of my favourite times. When it's nice and cool, and the sun still sets at 8pm so it's not too late to get those evening shots. It's been one heck of a week - 2 family shoots, 3 engagements, classes and a photo walk....and of course weddings every weekend. As I write this, I'm also preparing for a wedding I'll shoot once I'm done this blog entry.     It's amazing the flare you get with the Sigma 35mm when you stop it up a bit. I wasn't aware of this in the slightest - most of the Canon lenses will give me my "Ring of Fire" when I shoot completely wide open. Even after all th ...

The Turtle Mountain Engagement Session
There's no place better to shoot an engagement than the Okanagan, especially when it's sunny and nice out. These two were a little shy, after a few minutes we were all laughing and joking like old friends.         They weren't sure of the area, so we drove all over the place. This is a dock on Kal Beach, next we heading to a small wooded area I like to take photos in.       And then to Turtle Mountain. It got pretty windy!           But we still did just fine. It gets chilly sometimes, all three of us were fr ...

An Engagement at Sovereign Lake
I've been photographing¬†engagements for a while. My technique evolves as my standards grow, which is the way it should be. Always be pushing yourself. When I shoot, there should always been a plan in place. I like to have locations, light, props, and outfits all picked out. I've learned a long time ago that a planned shoot will always turn out better than a spur of the moment shoot. That's why my brides and I stay so close in the planning stages.     Things are gearing up now. I've got a wedding tomorrow, and the photography lessons are Monday, March 6. I'm really excited about that - the last set of lessons was incr ...

An Engagement at Knox Mountain
This engagement session was actually at Paul's Tomb, not Knox Mountain. Paul's tomb is a walking path right around the corner. You take a right out of the parking lot at knox, then another, and drive for five minutes. There's a weirdly small parking lots (about 3 or 4 cars) and then you're there. The park is popular. I've been there a few times and there's always people around walking their dogs or taking nature walks. Knox mountain is closed this time of year - the gate is up, so you can't drive up to any kind of scenic spot.     Although it's a little chilly, it's a great spot to shoot in Kelowna. Although I'm from V ...

An Engagement at Margaret Falls
Margaret Falls has always been one of my favourite places to hike. It's situated right in a lush valley, a little past Enderby. It's one of the many hidden gems in the Okanagan, another stunning place to take photos.     There's some piles of wood I've been wanting to take advantage of forever. Now that I know how photogenic they are (and temperamental), we'll see how easy it is to work them into a wedding day. The main issue is the travel time. Enderby is about 35 minutes out of Vernon, and Bridal Falls is closer to 90 minutes.       It can be pretty worth it, though. I recently ordered a ...

An Engagement overlooking Kalamalka Lake
Although I just finished photographing my last wedding, it doesn't mean I'm taking some time off. Shoots need to be booked. Ideas need to be drawn up for headliner images. Engagement sessions must take place. New techniques must be explored.     As a photographer, there is never time to sit back and relax. The world is moving ahead. There is so much work to be done. I'd say it's one of the best things about this profession. I love waking up in the morning and knowing that I've got tasks at hand. My work is always right in front of me.       And that leads us into the next shoot. We wen ...

The Bishop Bird Sanctuary Engagement
It's common knowledge I really enjoy my engagement shoots. It's like the formals on a wedding day, except I get to pick the best time of day and the best locations. As a photographer, I'll take any excuse to shoot, and I appreciate maniacal control over props, locations, and settings. It's a great example of us arranging everything so it's just right.     This session started out at Bishop Wild Bird Sanctuary. It's not the first time I've shot there - The Wakeboard Boat Wedding was shot there too. A friend of mine mentioned she'd be bringing her class there on a field trip. Lucky class!     These ...

A Proposal at Kopje Park
On March 7, I received a very interesting email. It was from a nervous fellow, telling me he wanted to get engaged on July 22.     Over the next few months, we went back and forth detailing locations, talking about code words. At one point he switched emails, because he wanted it to be a complete surprise. We had narrowed down the locations to Kopje Park and Kal Lookout. Although I was partial to Kal Lookout, Kopje Park is a lesser known park. It's not uncommon for us to have the whole park to ourselves.     This day, this windy, windy, day we had the park almost all to ourselves. I used a flash w ...

A Sparkling Hill Engagement
Well, Sparkling Hills and Predator Ridge. Nothing like a big grassy mountains on a golf course. Sparkling hills is right in the middle of a lush forest and never ending mountains, making the perfect spot for an engagement shoot. And Sparkling Hills has so¬†much to offer. What I love about engagement photos is that, for many couples, this is the first time they've ever had pictures taken together. Poses are a little shaky, couples are a little awkward. I enjoy this - we get to learn to know each other. I always make sure I show couples the photos right after I take them, so they can see how they're translating to the camer ...

Ro√ęn & Alex’s Kal Engagement
Nothing quite like engagement photos at Kal Provincial Park. Located out in Coldstream, it's one of the prettiest places around.  Some folks might find it confused. Yes, there's a main entrance - a yellow gate with two parking lots. However, there's also quite a few other entrances. Cosen's Bay, Rattlesnake Point,  and then a few hiking trails. It is pet friendly though! So feel free to bring your dog or cat to your engagement shoot. And what an awesome engagement shoot this was. I don't think it's really any secret that I love dogs. Everything except for cleaning up after them. I find it pretty fun when people bring their dogs (and sometim ...

An Engagement at Cosens bay
Vernon is amazing for finding spots to take photos. We have more lakes and parks than almost any place I've ever seen. You can't drive for more than ten minutes without finding a beautiful spot for some engagement photos. Original date of this shoot was May, 2015. These two, as many are, were very nervous for their first shoot. They were worried they wouldn't act right. I had told them in the consult that I'm bossy, because I am. I don't like people to have shells between their personality and me. Bare it all. So the first few photos we took in proven, old fashioned poses that I know from experience will look good. I'm always provi ...

A Cozy Engagement Session in Coldstream, BC
Some of my favourite engagement photos are in this session And it's hard for me to pick. I do my best to make sure every session is special. Every session. That being said, this couple - these two were so warm and fun it was more like a party than an engagement session. I had the privilege of shooting their wedding as well. It was my last wedding of 2015, (<- Click that link to go to the Turtle Mountain Wedding Album) and was it ever special. These two bent over backwards (sometimes literally) to make sure every photo looked absolutely perfect. It wasn't me setting up the photos - it was a collaboration of the three of us. I find myself t ...

A Fire Spinning Engagement Shoot in Vernon
This engagement session brings me back All the way back to February 2015 as a matter of fact. I was experimenting with a few concepts - colour bleeding, sparklers, and fire spinning. All of them turned out pretty well. What's special about this shoot (besides the couple) is that the wedding took part at Turtle Mountain, so we had the engagement shoot on turtle mountain itself. See, this makes sense, because it's a beautiful area. To clarify, the wedding happened on Turtle Mountain Winery.  Nearby, I would say about a ten minute drive, there's the actual Turtle Mountain. People are doing their best to sell expensive homes there, and there's t ...

Engagement Photos at Gellatly Nut Farm
One of my favourite places to take Engagement Photos in West Kelowna, Gallatly has a little bit of something for everyone. It's a working Heritage Nut Farm, if you can believe that. There's an annual nut sale, and the proceeds go to keeping up this beautiful section of West Kelowna. There's even a wedding arbour, if you're up having your ceremony there. Word of warning, though, there isn't any place on the property to have your reception. However, next door, The Cove is a top notch resort that will host your reception, then give you and your guests a place to stay once all the partying is up. I've been the photographer many times at bot ...
