We spent the weekend photographing 395 figure skaters. In the end, we had 45,000 photos to show for it. I don’t think I need to get into the specifics – I had an earlier blog post that went into that. The real amazing part for me was finally seeing the detail in which we captured these talented young ninjas.

This is a crop of a 21 megapixel image – a very small crop, and it shows you exactly what these cameras were capable of. We purchased two 5d mk3’s and ran them with the 70-200 f/2.8L IS‘s, and it shows. I always thought of Canon as a wedding camera brand, but this changed my mind right away!

It was useful being able to stop the shutter all the way up to 1/8000’s of a second. The ISO noise reduction was pretty good too. At 4,000 ISO I hardly noticed any problems with the focus or the clarity. The 5d can go all the way up to 102,000 ISO. The photos are bright and usable throughout the entire spectrum. Well, up to 25,600 anyway. 😉

We were very impressed by what we saw. For context, when I was 7, I was doing my paper route, saving up to by a new nintendo. It took me a while too. Nintendo’s were $100, and paperboy pay back then was 20$/month. Fortunately, I managed to eventually save up for it, and consequently tire of video games once I hit my awkward teen years.

Would I do it again? Who knows. It was fun, but it was kinda stressful too. A whole weekend in the hotel room, 14 hours a day in one small spot, feeding on power bars and junk food. I would say, I can’t wait for my next wedding!
