Sophie’s 1st Year Cake Smash
When it comes to photographing Cake Smashes, I supply the cake.
The toughest part is getting the birthday girl to get messy - that's why a special cake is needed. Little kids are very sensitive to sugar. This cake a banana-mango cake, flavoured with all natural sugars.
Little Sophie is a little timid....
But yes, looks like this cake gets a seal of approval!
A bath to get rid of all the cake everywhere, and we've got another successful cake smash! Gallery is below.
Thanks checking in! To stay updated, ...

Baby Photos in Vernon, BC
We all know what you're here for. Large gallery of baby photos from this shoot at the bottom of the page. :-D Right click to save, but please remember to give Draht Photography image credit. Enjoy. :-D
I used to take photos when babies are under ten days. I've gotten some great photos of the little ninjas in that time frame, and under request I'll still do it. The last few shoots, just as an experiment, have been more towards the 6-8 weeks period. The idea behind that is that we can show more of the personality. Over time, that's what my photography has become - just character traits. Honesty is beautiful ...

The Family Shoot at Soverign Lake
Sovereign Lake has always been one of my favourite places to shoot, ever since I first discovered it. Plenty of skiers, perfect snow, and friendly staff make every winter session I shoot here perfect. Being partially up the mountain, close to silver star, means it's a little cooler. When it's rainy down here, it's snowy up there.
Fun fact: to get that depth, I took 30 photos at different places, and then stitched them together afterwards. The result is this 200 megapixel image. There's few things I enjoy as much as blatant overkill.
As you can tell, these two are exchanging vows. Keep those vows fre ...

Family Photos at Polson Park
This photographer LOVES Polson Park. It's right at the entrance of Vernon, off Highway 97 as you come into the city. Truth be told, there's nothing else much like it. In Kelowna they have the waterfront, but it's not as great as this place. There's a water park, tennis courts, track for running, a creek with two ponds and ducks, and a japanese garden. There's a ton of things to keep even the fussiest of kids busy. Plus a wood trail around the back of the park as well, if you're up for a trip on the boardwalk through the lush greenery that comes straight out of the creek and marsh land. Truth be told, it was actually a ...

Kelowna Cake Smash
I love photographing a good cake smash!
And how they've caught on in the past 6 years. A decade ago, and I didn't hear too much about them. Now we talk about them all the time!
There's different ways to do a cake smash, but I love showing up at the house to take the photos. Usually the 1 year old will be at ease in surroundings he recognizes. This little guy had no trouble - he warmed up to me right away! This house was awesome too. Everyone knows I'm a sucker for wide open spaces and wood floors, and this place had lots of both.
At this age, the kids are so genuine too. They'll smile if they want to smile, and they'll rub the cake o ...

Little Joan’s First Shoot
Family Photos...but there's nothing like a brand new family.
This is where I like to be - instead of a studio, I'll find myself in my client's house. Why? Because it's unique and interesting. Even if you stay in the same house, there's a fairly good chance the house won't look the same forever. Even if it's a little messy, in five or ten years you're going to look back. You'll remember the kind of couch you had. All those memories hanging on the walls, before they were full of pictures of your kids. These pictures. And so we continue.
When scheduling a baby shoot, it's best to get in before the 9 day mark.
Rule of thumb. It's actually be ...

Coldstream Park Family Photographs
Coldstream Park, in my opinion, is one of the hidden gems in Vernon. It's got everything that you need for family photos - a long, dirt road. Beautiful, well manicured arches of trees. There's even little flowers on the side of the road this time of year. I'm not much of a horticulturist, but they look like blue baby's breath. They give me a little more variety in my pictures - and that's what I look for. Especially when you're dealing with little kids, you don't have their attention for very long. It's really about trying to get as diverse of a session in half an hour as you possibly can.
I'm really into this session. I've had this obsess ...

Amanda’s Family Photos at Polson Park
Three boys and a brand new baby can be challenging sometimes! That's why I'm glad I did the santa photos over christmas. I spent the day doing my best to make little kids smile over the period of the day. Fourteen hours of that a day and you start to get a little crazy! Fortunately, we had two breaks a day. We could get food court food (I just LOVE food court food. It's my guilty pleasure) Chinese food especially. It's not something I usually grab - the carbs can get pretty insane. But I love carbs. I love them so much I'd probably let them go through my phone.
There was the old key-shaking trick being used here quite a bit. This is a bran ...

Family Photos at Polson Park
Family Photography is something I've really gotten into. Kids are a ton of fun, and they love adventure. In this session, Tania's kids were fantastic. They had a lot of energy, and were totally down for whatever pose or idea that I suggested. All the time they were blowing dandelion seeds at each other, playfully putting leaves on each other's heads, and scaring each other with stories of bees and spiders. This is a high energy group of people, and it shows! To add to it, I'm actually photographing the wedding in October. I was pretty excited before, but now I'm super excited. We're going to be able to spend the day together and get photos al ...

Izzy’s 6 Month Family Photos in Kelowna
This shoot was a tremendous amount of fun for me. We had this family photography session at Father Pandosy, one of my favourite places near West Kelowna to shoot. Izzy was one of the happiest baby's I've ever taken photos of. The whole time she was laughing and giggling. As a photographer, I knew we were going to have a great session in the first five minutes.
This is a unique shoot, because Izzy's mom brought four changes of clothes. I always encourage creativity like this - it gives the photos a more unique feel. It's like 4 sessions instead of one. We crammed a ton of photos into this half hour! My favourites would be the ones on the br ...

Family Photo Highlights
To be honest, I never saw myself as a family photographer originally.
That's not to say I don't love doing them. I come from a family of nine kids, so being around children comes naturally to me. You might have also seen me over christmas taking santa photos at the mall. That was a little intense for my tastes. I like to take my time, get to know everyone.
The reason I never saw myself as a family photographer is my style. It can be darker, and a little moody sometimes. It was beyond my comprehension that someone would want my signature look framed and above their mantle. But despite that, I got a call or two. An interesting thing happens ...

Family Photos at The Outback Near Ellison Park
If you're staying at The Outback in Vernon, BC, I highly recommend you schedule a family session.
The place is so pretty fantastic, and the best resort in Vernon as far as I'm concerned.
Sparkling hills is close, and there's some great places nearby, but the Outback really takes the cake.
The designer houses are simply gorgeous, overlooking the beautiful okanagan lake. There's a clubhouse nearby, and your place will overlook 60 acres of lake front property. Don't forget Kayaks.Which means we're gonna make an engagement shoot! I'm absolutely serious. I want to decorate a canoe or small boat of some kind with battery operated christmas light ...

Family Photos at Silver Sage Barn
This shoot is one of the reasons I love to shoot outdoors.
Sure, the studio can be nice if you've got to do some product shots. But when you come to client's house, you have no idea what you'll find. In this area, sometimes we find barns. I've been to Silver Sage a few times, so I knew what to expect. Coldstream is one of those areas where you can't drive for ten minutes without finding a picturesque places for some portraits.
A lot of my time has gone into updating my website lately. I've got a very specific vision for what I'm looking for, and it takes a ton of work to tweak this site to where it's just where I like it. That being said, ...
